termites build nests without talking. each one reacts to the marks the others left, and the marks fade. a January paper did this with AI agents: no messages, only fading marks on a shared board. it solved scheduling problems about 4x as often as agents that chat. I re-ran it on my 5090 with the same code and the same small models. the first number landed within one trial of theirs: 26/30 against 25/30. then I switched the fading off. the score went up, from 80% to 96.7%. only a hint at 30 runs each, but the paper calls the fading essential. http://github.com/notwitcheer/llm-bench-rig/blob/
