Where GREP came from Brian Kernighan (Bell Labs MTS): “Oh yeah, grep. Ken Thompson tells it very well, but the gist of it is that in the text editor, the ed text editor, which was the first real editor on the Unix system, there is a command called g, which says do this command on all of the lines that match a particular regular expression. And the syntax is in fact g, whatever the regular expression is, slash p, print all the lines that match this pattern. And hence grep. It's become a noun, a verb, a gerund, you name it.”
