KV Cache Engineering is where a surprising amount of LLM serving performance is won or lost. The idea starts simply - during autoregressive generation, the model should not recompute keys and values for every previous token at every step. For each new token, a transformer layer computes a new query, key and value. The new K/V state is appended to that layer’s cache, while the query attends over the retained K/V from previous positions. We keep the past keys and values because future tokens need them. Past queries do not need to be cached. This saves a huge amount of repeated computation, bu
