Windows file sharing uses the SMB protocol, Server Message Block, to allow devices on a network to access shared folders, printers, and resources. Every Windows installation has this capability built in and enabled by default. It is how company file servers work, how mapped network drives work, and how printers get shared across an office. The problem is permissions. When a Windows share is misconfigured with open permissions, meaning Everyone has read access or worse, full control, any device that can reach it on the network can browse its contents without providing any credentials at all.
